Alec Cumming
Alec Cumming (b. 1986, Norwich, UK) is a British painter celebrated for his bold, playful abstraction and vivid engagement with place, light, and memory. A graduate of Norwich University of the Arts (BA Hons, 2007), Cumming’s practice bridges British lyrical traditions with global influences. His transformative three-year period at the Niv Art Centre in South Delhi inspired his use of intense colour, spatial rhythm, and architecture. Drawing inspiration from a pan-global vocabulary shaped by time spent in India, California, Cyprus, and Sri Lanka, Cumming translates fleeting physical experiences into vibrant oil paintings.
Working from a bank of sketches, photographs, and memories, he captures everything from the harsh, colour-popping glare of midday sun to the quiet stillness of a poolside afternoon. His semi-recognisable forms suggest narratives, architectural motifs, rich fabrics, or tables laden with paraphernalia, inviting viewers to decipher their own meanings. Now working from the Norfolk countryside, Cumming exhibits internationally and is held in private collections worldwide.
