Gina Soden

At the heart of Gina Soden’s photography is a preoccupation with abandoned structures and locations. Based in Reading, she travels widely to undisclosed sites throughout Europe and explores the boundaries of beauty, decay, nostalgia and neglect. The genesis of each piece is often the unique architectural character of a location, heightened by its painfully slow transformation after years of abandonment. Working primarily with photography, Soden has increasingly expanded her practice into mixed media, incorporating collage, found and hand-painted papers, image transfer and other material processes.
Her work is concerned less with documenting abandoned places than with interpreting their atmosphere, history and traces of former use. Soden has exhibited internationally since 2012, with exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Berlin, Hong Kong and across Europe. Recent highlights include solo exhibitions at Palazzo Buontalenti in Florence and Palazzo della Zecca in Palermo in 2026, Earth Photo at the Royal Geographical Society, FotoFestival Baden in Austria, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and a solo exhibition at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON.
