Selected Artist: London 2026

Lindsay Mapes

Originally from the USA, Mapes studied Painting at San Francisco Art Institute (1996–2000). She then went on to receive her MFA in Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London (2008–10). From 2021–2023 she was on the Turps Off-Site Education Art School in London. Mapes’ art explores themes of truth. The truth about painting. The truth about surface. The truth about making and the process that evolves from that. Mistakes are made and left on view. The rawness of the material is just as active as the paint floating or sinking on and into the surface. She is especially interested in the idea of craft as fine art.
She preserves the integrity of the material and the history of embroidery while reimagining its use as a medium for painting. Recent exhibitions and editorials include: ‘Architectural Digest’ WorkShop/APD (2026); ‘Textiles X Art’ Thames and Hudson Publishing 2026; General Assembly, Eric Firestone Gallery, New York City (2026); ‘Vertical Resistance', Hackney Art Week, London (2026), ‘A gesture, an action, touching…’ At APT Gallery, London 2025; ‘Melt’ at Hypha Studios x Creative Land Trust, Frieze, London 2023.
