Selected Artist: London 2026

Mark Powell

Mark Powell (b. 1980, Leeds) is a British contemporary artist renowned for his intricate, hyper-realistic drawing using only a standard ballpoint (Biro) pen. He creates detailed portraits – most notably of elderly subjects – directly onto vintage found paper, such as antique roadmaps, 19th-century envelopes, and historical letters. By overlaying weathered faces with the marks, postmarks, and geography of aged documents, Powell connects the personal histories etched into human wrinkles with the stories embedded in the canvas.
After overcoming a difficult background, Powell earned a Fine Art degree from the University of Huddersfield in 2006. His work rejects modern notions of digital perfection in favor of raw, "poetized realism," and has been exhibited internationally across the UK, Europe, and the United States. He currently lives and works in Brighton.
