Susan Rocklin
A painter based in London, Susan works primarily in oil and watercolour. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2019 with an MA in Painting, she is interested in all things soft and ambiguous; narratives hidden under surface reality. Her paintings, often at large scale, are just as concerned with space as object; they are informed by Japanese traditional landscapes and also Edvard Munch’s colour and line innovations and his empathetic depictions of the feminine. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in the UK and Europe, been longlisted in several art awards and won a residency at the Wells Contemporary Open in 2025.
Her work is held in private collections worldwide. Susan’s paintings explore and project an active interpretation of femininity. Her canvas is the natural environment and she enlists a recurring cast of characters, including cowboys and animals. Horses feature in many of her works – they are portals between the instinctive and rational realms, expressive and energetic, yet serene. Cowboys, meanwhile, are some of the last remaining custodians of nature. In these painted scenarios, where time and cultures are conflated, new worlds and possibilities emerge.
