592: Recursive, 2026
Edition: 1 of 1
Medium: Paint & ink on card
Size: 70 × 50 cm
Recursive self-improvement is the point at which a system becomes able to improve itself, with each better version building the next one faster. It sits at the heart of both the greatest hopes and the deepest fears about AI. For the optimists it is the route to curing diseases, solving climate change and ending scarcity. For the pessimists it is the moment we stop being in control, when something that learns faster than we can follow starts setting its own direction. "Everything is going to be OK" is the reassurance we keep being given. The work sits in the gap between that reassurance and how little anyone, including the people building it, can say about where it leads. It is not a prediction either way. It is about what it feels like to live inside that uncertainty.
