Ralph Lazar

Ralph Lazar is a South African artist based between London and Cape Town whose practice explores the relentless accumulation of information that defines contemporary life. Working across drawing, text, mapping and data, Lazar transforms the daily flow of news, politics, music, markets, weather, language and personal experience into densely layered visual records of our time. At the centre of his practice are two ongoing bodies of work. Flow Pieces operate as contemporaneous visual journals, collapsing public events and private experience into a single field: headlines collide with song lyrics, financial data, conversations, maps, lists and incidental observations.
Fundamental Pieces take a more forensic approach, distilling complex subjects, from constitutional history and political systems to economic theory, natural history, navigation and migration, into intricately constructed visual snapshots. Born in Johannesburg, Lazar studied Law and Economics at the University of Cape Town and the London School of Economics. He began his art practice in California in 2016. His work has since been exhibited internationally at Art Miami, the LA Art Show, Art Palm Springs and Art Market San Francisco. In 2020, his artwork appeared across 1,700 digital screens throughout New York City.
