Market Flowers

Edition: 1
Medium: Batik on silk and linen, Indigo dyes
Size: 174 x 241cm

The screen printed photograph of flowers on indigo dyed cloth are from Pasar Ngasem, the local market in Yogyakarta, where I start my day before walking to the batik studio. Indigo is one of the oldest dye tradtiions in Javanese batik, cultivated across Java long before synthetic dyes in favour of vivid, and more commercially uniform colour. This piece features a motif along the bottom called Semen Sawat; one of the most sacred motifs in Javanese batik, depicting the wings and tail of Garuda, the mythical bird of the gods, and historically reserved for royalty meaning power and protection.

Framed in a solid wood frame.
