Pasar Ngasem

Edition: 1
Medium: British plant dyes on linen
Size: 40 x 50

Before synthetic dyes remade the textile world, colour came from the land. Bark, root, leaf, seed and mineral; the palette of batik is, first and foremost, a portrait of its place. This section traces a natural dye palette I developed in collaboration with colour specialists drawing on plant sources native to the UK and setting them in dialogue with Indonesia’s own deep tradition of botanical dyeing. At its heart, this is about something simple: making batik in Britain using traditional Indonesian techniques and British plant dyes. The paintings are made on silk linen using natural dye pastes and hand-drawn batik wax. The images draw on photographs from recent travels in Indonesia.

Framed in a solid wood frame.
